Never comfort someone by offering advice or saying “I understand.”
When someone is facing a crisis, here are two of the worst things you can do to comfort them: (1) share good, general purpose theology as advice and, (2) talk about your own experience proving that you understand their predicament.
I recommend hugs instead of words.
